Abstract:

"> Long-chain alkanes are a major constituent of crude oils and their conversions into other compounds are of interest depending on the specific application. Here, five native microbial consortia obtained from petroleum polluted sites were examined for biological conversion of n-octadecane as a representative of long chain alkanes. The experiments were implemented in 250 mL flasks containing 0.5 g n-octadecane in 40 mL culture media kept on a shaker at 160 rpm and 30C for one week. A pure culture of Psedumonas putida was inoculated at the same condition for comparison. Amongst the consortia, ABN52 imposed more obvious changes on n-octadecane. The GC-MS analysis of daily samples showed the appearance of lighter branched compounds at the first and second days of incubation but disappeared in the following days. At the end of incubation time up to 20 (w/w%) of the initial substrate was turned into polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). It also suggested higher activity of the consortia compared to the pure culture of Psedumonas putida. Keywords: Bioconversion, Aalkanes, Polyhydroxyalkanoate, PHA, Pseudomonas Putida

Microbial consortia at steady supply

Metagenomics has revealed hundreds of species in almost all microbiota. In a few well-studied cases, microbial communities have been observed to coordinate their metabolic fluxes. In principle, microbes can divide tasks to reap the benefits of specialization, as in human economies. However, the benefits and stability of an economy of microbial specialists are far from obvious. Here, we physical...

MICROBIAL CHAIN DEGRADATION OF CHOLESTEROL BY ARTHROB ACTER SIMPLEX

Because of the importance of microbial metabolites of cholesterol as precursors in the synthesis of steroidal drugs, we decided to study the ability of Arthrobacter simplex to degrade cholesterol. Arthrobacter simplex cleaves the side chain of cholesterol in the presence of 2,2'-dipyridyl and produces 4-androstene-3,17- dione (AD) and androsta- 1,4-diene-3,17-dione(ADD). Two other intermedi...

Metagenomic Analyses Reveal the Involvement of Syntrophic Consortia in Methanol/Electricity Conversion in Microbial Fuel Cells

Methanol is widely used in industrial processes, and as such, is discharged in large quantities in wastewater. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have the potential to recover electric energy from organic pollutants in wastewater; however, the use of MFCs to generate electricity from methanol has not been reported. In the present study, we developed single-chamber MFCs that generated electricity from ...

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Analysis of Microbial Consortia in Wastewater Treatment Processes for High Explosives

The engineering aspects of bioreactors treating wastewaters contaminated with high explosives are better understood than the microbial communities within the reactors. Five anaerobic bioreactors treating energetics were studied to better understand bacterial compositions in each reactor system as related to influents containing various energetic materials. Studied were: three anaerobic fluidize...
